Glacial Adventure from Jöklasel
To experience the pristine beauti og the glacier,
take an organized expedition onto the glaciers in snowmobile or
jeep and with experienced guides.
On Vatnajökull is mountain-hotel, Jöklasel, at
an altitude of 840 m. above sea level, on Skálafellsjökull, one
of Vatnajökull's numerous glaciers, approximately 55 km west of
the fishing town of Höfn. Jöklasel is only 16 km from the main
road. The road to Jöklasel also goes to Smyrlabjargarárvirkjun
(a hydroelectric power plant). The last 6 km of the road require
vehicles with four wheel drive. The Jöklasel facilities include
a restaurant that comfortably seats 80 - 90 people and sleeping
bag accommodations for about 30 persons. The view from Jöklasel
is absolutely breathtaking as it is the highest restaurant in
Iceland.
You will certainly enjoy your meal at the Jöklasel restaurant
as you take in the magnificent view from the mountain tops to
the open Atlantic ocean. Jöklasel is the center of all glacial
activities.
We offers various excursions from 1st June -
7 September. Reservations are made for groups, minimum six persons
per group, from 15 March - 31st May and from 8th September - 15th
October.
We offer various short excursions in the vicinity
of Jöklasel, duration approximately 1.5-2 hours by jeep and 1-2.5
hours by Skidoo snowcats. There are also longer excursions within
the Vatnajökull area by snowcats, such as to Hvannadalshnúkur
(8-10 hours), to Grímsvötn (7-9 hours), and to Kverkfjöll (7-9
hours). The longer excursions (4-11 hours) must be booked in advance
and the minimum is six persons per excursion. In addition there
are special Vatnajökull tours for conference visitors with a lavish
seafood buffet served on ice blocks on the glacier. After the
meal on the glacier, those who interested in the plastic arts
have a fine opportunity to make sculptures of snow and ice.
We provide overalls designed to stand all weather
conditions, helmets and moon boots. Destinations may change due
to weather conditions.

If you travel by bus or drive our one 4WD car to Jöklasel
(altitude 840 m) you can join our tours. We can admire the view
before we take off for the adventure on the glacier, a tour by
Skidoo snowcat. We proudly offer you a lunch in the Jöklasel Restaurant,
which is truly the only Mountain Restaurant in Iceland. You will
certainly enjoy your meal as you look out the windows to see the
spectacular landscape from the high Glacier to the open Atlantic
ocean.

The group travel to Jöklasel by scheduled bus, jeep or drive
4WD car. Having experienced the picturesque landscape on the way,
we take off to the unique experience of driving the Skidoo snow
cat on the vast expanses of Vatnajökull headed for Breiðabungu
and the to east for Heiðnabergsfjöll. Breathtaking landscape
with deep valleys and high mountains will certainly capture your
attention. It is indeed an exiting experience to ride on the snowcats
in what some people might say this almost an alien landscape.

from Höfn. The super jeep ride from there up to Jöklasel is an
adventure of its own and as you arrive at the glacier you discover
the thrills of the Skidoo snow cat ride. For those who prefer
a more relaxed way to experience the wonders of the glacier we
offer a tour by jeep. As you have finished the adventure on the
glacier it only seems appropriate to have lunch in the Jöklasel
Restaurant, famous for its magnificent view.

- Jeep-/skiing tour from Main Road (F985)
Smyrlabjargarárvirkjun is on the main road (route 1), 45 kilometers
from Höfn. Everyone can take this tour. Some have put ski on
their feet in this tour.
First we travel to Jöklasel where we travel with super
jeeps 9 km into Vatnajökull to Brókarbotnstindur.
There is Picturesque landscape, deep valleys like Kálfafellsdalur,
mountains like Þverártindsegg and Öræfajökull
and great Vatnajokull itself.
The jeeps leave us behind and we walk on skis back to Jöklasel
where we have soft drinks.
It is possible to have sleeping bag accommodation at start of
this tour or end.view.
